Home Care Instructions

Immediately after endodontic treatment, the duration of local anesthetic used will vary from patient to patient.  Please avoid chewing during this period to avoid biting your cheek/lips.  Afterwards, your tooth and surrounding gum tissue may be slightly tender for several days as a result of manipulation during treatment and previous condition of your tooth. This tenderness is normal and is no cause for alarm.

Do not chew food on the affected side until your endodontic therapy is completed and your tooth is covered with a crown, a protective restoration provided by your general dentist. You may continue your regular dental hygiene regimen. If you have been given any prescription medication such as antibiotics or pain medications, please take the medication as directed.  If you later develop an itch or rash anywhere on your body please STOP taking the medication, call our office or your medical doctor immediately as this can be a sign of allergic reaction.  If you haven’t been prescribed medication, discomfort may be alleviated by taking ibuprofen (Advil), aspirin, or acetaminophen (Tylenol) as directed.  Soreness and discomfort may last up to 48 hours.  Should you experience discomfort that cannot be controlled with the above listed medications, or should swelling develop, please contact this office immediately.  If you need to call after hours, please have your pharmacy number available.

After root canal treatment has been completed, an appointment MUST be made with your dentist to have the tooth permanently restored as soon as possible to avoid the tooth cracking during biting pressure.

NOTE: Avoid alcohol while taking any of these medications. Should you experience discomfort that cannot be controlled with the above listed medications, or should swelling develop, please contact this office immediately.

The office telephone is answered day and night. If you need to call after hours, please have your pharmacy number available.
